It is estimated that there are 125,000 to 200,000 new HAV infections in the U.S. each year. Of these, 84,000 to 134,000 infections are symptomatic. Each year, approximately 100 deaths are due to HAV (CDC, September, 2000)).

Transmission of HAV occurs by the fecal-oral route. During outbreaks of a sexual origin, homosexually active males have been identified as a high risk group.

Clinical features include fatigue, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, intermittent nausea, diarrhea, and jaundice. The disease varies in severity from a mild illness lasting 1 to 2 weeks to a severely disabling disease lasting several months. The severity of the illness appears to increase with age, but complete recovery is the general rule. Mortality has been known to occur in the very young, adults over 50, and persons with chronic liver disease. No chronic infection is known to occur
