FUNGAL INFECTIONS
Dermatomycosis
Microsporn canis, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Trichophyton
verrucosum,
Human:
1. Lesions occur on human head or body
2. circular or annular because of central healing.
3. Usually scaling or hair loss or breakage
4. occasional itching.
5. Sometimes erythema, induration, crusting, or suppuration
occurs.
6. May be confused with many allergic, hormonal, or other
infectious conditions.
Incubation period. 4-14 days.
Confirmatory tests:
1. Microscopic examination of KOH-treated scrapings from
edge of lesion,
2. observe lesion under ultraviolet light (Micmsporum)
3. culture.
Occurrence:
1. More common in warm, humid climate.
2. Skin irritation, crowding, and debilitation predispose.
Transmission:
1. Direct contact of skin with infected individual

2. Indirect contact with fomites such as saddle blankets and
brushes.
CONTROL AND PREVENTION
1. Treat human cases with griseofulvin orally if persistent
infection.
2. Clip and clean around lesion and treat with antimycotic
locally.
3. Clean and disinfect fomites.
4. Practice good sanitation.
5. Before pets are kept in nursing homes or other institutions,
examine for evidence of dermatomycosis.

BLASTOMYCOSIS
Blastomyces dermatitidis
Occurrence in Man:
- a febrile disease, arthralgia, myalgia, and pleuritic pain
Transmission
- via the airborne route
Diagnosis:
- direct microscopic examination of sputum and material from
lesions, on isolation of the agent in culture media, and on
histological preparations

CANDIDIASIS Candida albicans
Man:
- Diaper rash and cheilitis (lip sores) are often caused by
Candida.
- Mycotic stomatitis (thrush) characterized by lightly adhering
white plaques on the tongue and other parts of the mouth that
can leave a bloody surface when removed
Control:
1. Neonatal candidiasis can be prevented by treating the
mother’s vaginal candidiasis with nystatin during the third
trimester.
2. This antimycotic antibiotic can also be used in patients
undergoing prolonged treatment with broad-spectrum
antibiotics

HISTOPLASMOSIS
Histoplasma capsulatum
1. acute pulmonary
2. chronic pulmonary
Transmission:
1. The reservoir of the agent is the soil
2. where it lives as a saprophyte
Control:
1. reducing people’s exposure to dust
2. The use of protective masks has been recommended.
