The eye د.رند عبداللطيف عبدهللا
Accessory components of the eye:
Eyelid: the structure of both the upper & lower eyelid is similar & consist
of 4 layers:
Skin:thin skin with thin epidermis, short dermal papillae, hair &
sweat glands.
Orbicularis oculi muscle: layer of skeletal muscle
Tarsal plate: plate of dense C.T.
Conjuctiva: stratified columnar cells
Within these layers are various types of glands:
1) Meibomian glands (tarsal glands): They produce a sebaceous
substance which creates an oily layer on the surface of the
tear film. This helps to prevent rapid evaporation of the
normal tear layer.
2) Glands of zeis: small sebaceous glands in association with
hair follicle
3) Glands of moll: sweat glands at the margin of the eye lid
