A rubbery, white, well-circumscribed mass is clearly demarcated from the surrounding yellow adipose tissue. The fibroadenoma does not contain adipose tissue and therefore appears denser than the surrounding normal tissue on mammogram. Note the glistening vaguely nodular myxoid appearance.
Fibroadenoma

The cut surface of this mass is characteristic for fibroadenoma with its lobulated pattern and solid firm, bulging grayish-tan parenchyma. Occasional slit-like spaces can be seen. Myxoid change characterized by a glistening surface and calcification in longer standing lesions is not uncommon.

The lesion consists of a proliferation of intralobular stroma surrounding and often pushing and distorting the associated epithelium. The border is sharply delimited from the surrounding tissue.

Phyllodes tumors are characterized by expansion and increased cellularity of the stromal component resulting in a leaf-like pattern. Increased stromal cellularity and mild cellular atypia can be seen in a benign phyllodes tumor.
